| Abstract Scope |
Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) exploits highly exothermic reactions leading to the formation of intermetallic and ceramic products from constituent, oftentimes elemental, powders or foils. This technique is of interest as a cost-saving method for rapid component production, as the processing temperatures used to form near-net shapes of desired phases can be achieved without need for excessive external heating. While specific binary and ternary systems have been thoroughly explored in the past, we employ thermodynamic databases of arbitrarily large compositional spaces to identify ranges exhibiting favorable behavior for stable SHS reactions. |
