Abstract Scope |
This study investigates the microstructural evolution of bulk metallic alloys that are experiencing ultrasonic fatigue via in-situ diffraction techniques. Cylindrical dog-bone samples of the alloys were machined and tuned to resonate with an ultrasonic fatigue system that utilizes piezoelectric transducers and amplifying horns to transmit vibrational waves at an approximate frequency of 20 kHz. Utilizing in-situ techniques such as synchrotron diffraction, the stress and microstructural evolution of the sample due to the high-speed cyclic strain can be tracked. Stroboscopic measurements reveal the instantaneous strain components within an ultrasonic cycle, while the long-term evolution is monitored over the course of the experiment. Observation of the sample until mechanical failure allows the investigation of crack initiation that can provide insight into the related microstructural mechanism and methods to extend the material fatigue limits. |
