This study investigates how grain size influences radiation-induced segregation (RIS) at grain boundaries in Fe-9.6Cr and Fe-40Ni-10Cr model alloys. Following irradiation with 9 MeV Fe3+ ions at 400 °C, alloys with grain sizes ranging from 110 nm to 40 μm were analyzed using STEM-EDS. In both alloys, RIS increased with larger grain sizes. For Fe-40Ni-10Cr, this relationship followed a logarithmic trend: smaller grains minimized RIS by facilitating defect annihilation at the boundary sinks, while larger grains limited these boundary interactions, shifting defect behavior to in-grain recombination. In contrast, Fe-9.6Cr exhibited a more complex, non-logarithmic trend at grain sizes below 450 nm. Ultimately, these findings highlight how managing grain size and defect sink density can optimize the radiation tolerance of structural alloys. |
