| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium and its alloys offer lightweight applications in aerospace, automotive and defense industries but the widescale commercial utilization of Mg alloys is limited due to its low ductility and formability at room temperature. Due to basal slip systems containing a limited number of available slip directions, researchers have improved the activation of non-basal slip by alloying magnesium with trace amounts of rare earth metals such as Yttrium. It was reported that MgY alloys displayed <c+a> slip activation and exhibited superior ductility, but the mechanism to explain remains unclear. In this study, we perform an in-situ tensile test on Mg-1 (wt%) Y while performing High Resolution Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (HREBSD). These techniques 1) quantify the evolution of Geometrically Necessary Dislocations and 2) characterize the complexities in the heterogenous stress state in polycrystals under plastic deformation. |
