| Abstract Scope |
During operation, appreciable transmutation products are generated in proton beam windows (PBWs) of accelerator-driven spallation neutron sources. High-energy protons (>1 GeV) and spallation neutrons produce a variety of transmutation products that can greatly affect material microstructure and mechanical properties. Samples composed of 6061-T651 aluminum (4.4 dpa, 3,600 appm H, 2,100 appm He) and Inconel 718 (19 dpa, 17,000 appm H, 4,300 appm He) were recently cut from PBWs at the Spallation Neutron Source following their decommissioning. Specimens from these samples were characterized using tensile testing, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and inert gas fusion (IGF) analysis. The transmutation products generated in each specimen were calculated using the particle-transport code MCNPX. This presentation will report the results of the transmutation product characterizations for the irradiated proton beam window specimens, and the impact on component lifetime considerations will be discussed. |
