Abstract Scope |
Rechargeable batteries are essential to the future of renewable energy, yet their performance is often limited by electrochemically induced mechanical degradation in high-capacity electrodes. This degradation leads to rapid capacity fade and shortened cycle life. Using a nanoscale battery cell inside a transmission electron microscope, we conducted in situ observations of electrochemical reactions, mechanical deformation, and fracture in individual nanowire and nanoparticle electrodes. To complement these experiments, we developed continuum and atomistic models to uncover the mechanistic origins of stress generation and mechanical failure in these materials. The simulation results offer insights into microstructural evolution and degradation at the nanoscale, with broad implications for the design of durable electrodes in high-performance rechargeable batteries.
