Abstract Scope |
Defects like dislocations and vortices have a strong influence on material
properties and their response to external forces. However, determining the
nucleation criteria for such defects under various conditions is challenging.
In this work, the stability of strained periodic structures to small
perturbations is examined. The conditions (effective temperature, average
density, type and magnitude of strain, etc.,) under which such structures
become linear unstable are derived for both one and two dimensional systems.
Depending on the conditions, the instability can lead to the nucleation
of dislocations or, in liquid/solid coexistence regions, to local melting.
Both analytic and numerical calculations are presented. |
