| Abstract Scope |
This work investigates the effect of Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) on FeMnAlNi and FeMnAlNiCr shape memory alloys fabricated by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). Specimens produced with and without in-situ laser remelting were HIP-treated, eliminating nearly all internal porosity and achieving near-full density. Densification substantially improved ductility but reduced strength and hardness in the Cr-free alloy. Chromium additions mitigated this softening, enabling greater retention of strength and hardness after HIP, with a remelted Cr-containing sample achieving an excellent balance of strength, hardness, and stiffness. In contrast, the Cr-free alloy exhibited larger ductility gains at the expense of strength, revealing a composition-dependent trade-off between strength and plasticity. Nanoindentation confirmed these trends, indicating that HIP homogenization does not suppress pseudoelasticity, while Cr preserved more reversible transformation capacity. This study bridges a gap by combining Cr alloying with post-HIP treatment, demonstrating their synergistic role alongside LPBF processing in tailoring dense, ductile Fe-based SMAs. |
