| Abstract Scope |
Classical corrosion models for metals and alloys rely on the assumption of one-dimensional homogeneous oxidation and charge transport, and often fail to capture real-world high-temperature systems characterized by heterogeneous growth of the oxide/metal interfaces. This non-uniform oxide growth is driven by local changes in chemistry and microstructure. Chemical inhomogeneities, such as unoxidized second phase precipitates embedded in the growing oxide, are hypothesized to locally modify the charge transport during oxidation.
Taking nanoscale Au inclusions in ZrO2 as the model system, we characterize the electric fields at metallic heterogeneities in oxide matrix using 4D-STEM experiments. The same technique based on center-of-mass shift measurement has been demonstrated in our previous work with flat interfaces. The outcome will enhance the current understanding of the impact of nanoscale heterogeneities on charge transport in oxide matrix during oxidation, with applied relevance to oxidation of Zr alloys based nuclear fuel cladding in fission reactors. |
