Abstract Scope |
Stretchable electronics can allow for new classes of devices and could enable highly reliable and wearable devices. Such devices will need to withstand large deformations, non-uniform loading, wear, and may be exposed to corrosive environments. Traditional manufacturing processes often result in devices with excellent functional properties but the mechanical characteristics are often an afterthought. We describe our work using Direct Ink Writing of polyurethane based inks including design approaches to encapsulate printed electronics in a compatible binders to achieve highly reliable devices. We discuss failure modes and trade-offs. We examine the cyclic deformation of embedded carbon filled polyurethanes in a polyurethane matrix and contrast this with traces printed on top of the polyurethane in both tension and compression. We present failure modes as a function of trace thickness and strain. In a second set of examples we embed commercially available inks in a polyurethane matrix and present a similar analysis. |
