| Abstract Scope |
Al–Sn–Si–Cu bearing alloys are widely used in tribological applications, and the increasing use of recycled aluminum has made Fe contamination unavoidable. Although Fe is generally considered detrimental due to the formation of brittle intermetallics, its influence on microstructure and wear behavior under different solidification conditions remains unclear. This study investigates the combined effects of Fe content and solidification route on phase formation, microstructure, and wear performance. Four alloys containing 6 or 10 wt.% Sn and 0 or 0.7 wt.% Fe were produced by conventional graphite mold casting and centrifugal casting in a copper mold. CALPHAD calculations, microstructural characterization, Vickers microhardness, and dry sliding wear tests were performed. Centrifugal casting refined the cellular-dendritic structure, while Fe promoted AlFeSi intermetallic formation without affecting dendritic spacing. Wear resistance was governed by β-Sn morphology, Fe-rich intermetallics, and solidification conditions rather than hardness, with Fe-containing alloys exhibiting improved wear performance under specific conditions. |
