Abstract Scope |
The world aging fleet of gas treatment centres (GTC) for fluoride recovery from aluminium smelter pot gas can be significantly improved by implementing Solios Turbobed technology and extended surface bags. Such retrofit solution improves fluoride capture, reduces the abrasion in reactors and enables gas flow increase due to lower overall pressure drop in the GTC.
The Solios Turbobed solution can be implemented on most technologies and was proved at 4 different smelters since 2018. The most recent retrofit installation was done at Hydro Årdal in 2019 on a Mikropul filter compartment from early 1970. The emission levels achieved after retrofit were comparable to the most modern technologies available in the market.
A key success factor was the early involvement of, and close cooperation with, Hydro ‘s operating teams. This ensured that the retrofit work was planned, and executed, safely and with minimal impact on normal operation during the works. |
