Abstract Scope |
Open-porous structures have become a focal point for leveraging the geometric freedom inherent to additive manufacturing. Nuclear reactor applications could benefit from engineered porosity that enhances heat dissipation or accommodates thermomechanical stresses in components like heat sinks. Alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) alloys offer superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional chromia-forming steels (e.g., SS316), particularly in aggressive environments such as flowing molten salts or lead. In this study, open-porous lattice structures (25 mm³) were fabricated from an AFA alloy using laser powder bed fusion, based on different repeating unit cell geometries (1 mm³ cell volume). Compression testing was used to evaluate energy absorption, stiffness, and buckling behavior, while preliminary microscopy provided insight into grain structure development across designs. These small-scale studies establish a foundation for understanding the mechanical limits and design flexibility of advanced steels, such as AFA alloys, fabricated via LPBF in architected forms relevant to future nuclear energy systems. |
