| Abstract Scope |
Improved understanding of the sulfur dynamics between dry scrubber and electrolysis cell is essential to predict impact of changes in raw material feeds. However, full scale trials are difficult to execute under realistic conditions. At Alcoa Mosjøen there is a electrolysis cell with a dedicated Pot Integrated Abart (PIA) dry scrubber, which was used in these trials, creating a pot-scrubber dynamics that is representative to a full smelter. The PIA with the cell enables us to manipulate the sulfur loading on one cell without any dilution of gas from the other cells in the dry scrubber. To increase the sulfur loading on the PIA, and in the loop between the PIA and the cell, a switchover to increased amounts of alumina from the anode factory fume treatment plant was done. This alumina contains significantly increased amounts of S, and represents an efficient approach to elevate the S amount. |
