Fabricating complex magnetic shielding components from permalloy (79 wt.% Ni, 16 wt.% Fe, 5 wt.% Mo) is challenging because its properties are highly sensitive to processing and conventional manufacturing limits achievable geometries. This study examines the grain growth kinetics and crystallographic defects in permalloy samples: (1) fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), (2) hot isostatically pressed (HIP) after LPBF, and (3) wrought, with annealing at 950, 1100, and 1200 °C for 1 to 96 hours. LPBF samples underwent significant recrystallization with limited subsequent grain growth compared to wrought samples exhibiting a typical power-law growth kinetics. HIP treatment enhanced grain growth kinetics by removing macroscale processing associated defects, while dispersed oxides remained a persistent contributor to sluggish grain growth in LPBF samples even after HIP. Findings demonstrate the need for LPBF specific post-process regimen to help improve the final mechanical and magnetic properties of soft magnetic materials. |
