| Abstract Scope |
Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets offer outstanding magnetic properties and are widely used in energy, electronics, automation, and medical devices. However, their brittleness limits broader application, leading to high failure rates and material loss during machining—especially for thin or narrow magnets. Enhancing mechanical robustness while maintaining high magnetic performance is thus a critical goal.
This presentation discusses how heterogeneous grain engineering, additive modification, and ductile grain boundary (GB) engineering affect the mechanical and magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets. Micromechanical modeling and experiments reveal that fracture strength depends on matrix grain size, and the structure, composition, distribution, and volume of GB phases (GBPs) and additives. Remarkably, using ductile GBPs led to concurrent improvements in flexural strength (σ) and intrinsic coercivity (Hci). These results demonstrate a viable pathway toward mechanically robust, high-performance Nd–Fe–B sintered magnets. |
