| Abstract Scope |
During the last three decades the word "sustainable" has become quite common in our parlance. We find however that the word "sustainable" has a different perspective and meaning across various sectors of our society. The field of metallurgy and material science is at a juncture. We need a major shift in the way we view the field from the lens of processing-structure-properties-performance, as well as how we educate the next generation of engineers. Moreover governmental policies, as well as industrial practices need significant overhauls. What seemed to work when the population of the planet earth was at 1.6 billion when we entered the 20th century is no longer valid as we entered the 21st century at 6.1 billion people. In this presentation the leadership team of SPARC will present a manifesto for the path forward to ensure that we are meeting our present needs without harming future generations, balancing environmental health, social equity, and economic growth. |
