| Abstract Scope |
The majority of metal manufacturing processes start from the liquid phase. With the ever-growing adoption of additive manufacturing by industries, rapidly solidified metallic parts are becoming more prevalent. In this work, we use electromagnetic levitation and impulse atomization to assess and produce alloys using high throughput under various rapid solidification (RS) conditions. We show how RS of aluminum alloys can yield metastable microstructures and how to leverage them. For example, RS can increase the supersaturation of the matrix. This allows to directly anneal the as-solidified structure, removing the need for the solutionizing and quench steps. By adjusting the degree of supersaturation, the size and volume fraction of the strengthening precipitates can be controlled. In hypo- or hyper-eutectic alloys, RS can also bypass the solidification of the primary phase, yielding a fully eutectic structure with superior mechanical properties. Results of the RS of various alloys will be presented (Al-Ce, Al-Cu, Al-Si). |
