| Abstract Scope |
We review the many experiments in real time imaging that have been performed over the decade and the manifold insights obtained. The earliest probed the depth and width of keyholes and dependence on laser input: key findings included a nearly linear dependence on linear energy density and a sensitivity to spot size, pointing to the importance of power density for the onset of vaporization. Experiments on alloys such as AA 6061 showed that hot cracking could be quantified and again related to the laser melting conditions: finally, this led to a new criterion for hot cracking susceptibility. Not all issues have been resolved, e.g., balling. Hot cracking in nickel alloys such as 738 and 230 could be alleviated via changes in composition and/or pre-heating the build plate. All these outcomes have been crucial for developing a physics-based understanding of laser powder bed fusion. |
