| Abstract Scope |
Friction-based additive manufacturing increasingly utilizes lubricant-free feedstock to prevent introducing impurities into high-strength 7xxx-series aluminum deposits. This study investigates the impact of surface lubrication of feedstock materials on the layer interfaces of Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) AA7050. These interfaces act as critical surface regions where contaminant agglomeration can nucleate fatigue and corrosion failures. Using identical processing parameters, deposits were fabricated from feedstock with two surface conditions: pre-sprayed boron nitride lubrication and lubricant-free. Neutron imaging at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's MARS beamline revealed elemental agglomeration at interfaces processed with boron nitride, while electron microscopy characterized the localized chemical distribution and phase evolution. The findings demonstrate that lubricant-free feedstock is necessary to maintain pristine chemical composition across deposition interfaces, ensuring the integrity of AFSD components deployed in extreme environments. |
