| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium-based alloys hold major promise for the application as temporary bone implants. However, predicting bone growth as a function of magnesium-based implant degradation remains challenging, as the biological response is tightly linked to the degradation dynamics themselves.
We have recently published a predictive one-dimensional computational model of bone growth and mineralization around titanium and magnesium-gadolinium-based implants. In the present work, we have built upon the existing model and incorporated spatial information on Mg diffusion and the respective response in relative bone growth. The comparison of the computational model with experimental work regarding WE43 implants shows good agreement. Thus, because the model is independent of implant material, it can predict bone growth from only a few data points of a degradation study, which will contribute to the reduction of animal experiments in the future. |
