The life of a component can be decomposed into the cycles consumed during fatigue crack initiation (FCI), microstructurally small crack (MSC) growth, and long crack (LC) growth until fracture. However, fatigue life models rarely consider these three distinct phases and typically compare experimental fatigue life to simulation results, leading to large errors, particularly when spanning across fatigue regimes and length-scales. This work proposes a comprehensive crystal plasticity methodology that jointly considers FCI and MSC growth, requiring the calibration of a single parameter, identified using distributions of experimental and simulated fatigue lives in a Bayesian inference framework. The remaining life in the LC regime is evaluated using linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), providing a detailed assessment of each stage of fatigue failure. Emergent trends such as MSC growth rates are validated using independent experimental data, and the framework is demonstrated for additively manufactured IN718 in the high cycle fatigue regime. |
