| Abstract Scope |
The development of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys has recently received renewed interest owing to the development of new additive manufacturing techniques which enable their more economical production. Fully leveraging the potential of ODS alloys requires detailed knowledge of high temperature strengthening mechanisms. Here, we report a series of large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of the Ni-Y2O3 system, enabled by several new simulation tools, and complementary experimental observations investigating the dislocation-oxide interactions believed to play a key role in microstructural stabilization. We provide a detailed characterization of the mechanism by which dislocations bypass oxide particles and evaluate the strengthening effect of different Y2O3 phases. The atomic-scale details of the interface can play a prominent role in strengthening behavior, indicating that interfacial engineering could be used to optimize ODS alloy performance. The mechanistic insights gained from this study can serve as a solid foundation to guide the development of next generation alloys. |
