| Abstract Scope |
The metal heat treat sector accounts for a significant fraction of the US process energy and waste heat, with steels making up the majority. Opportunities for innovation and efficiency are found in heat delivery mechanisms where the materials are directly heated rather than rely on thermal transport through a medium or radiant heat. Induction heat treatments of steels have become standardized for the rapid processing of high-performance parts. The addition of high magnetic fields to the induction heat treat process has resulted in significant process efficiency and mechanical property improvements by altering the thermodynamics and kinetics. In the current work, this transformative technology, induction-coupled thermomagnetic processing (ITMP), is being developed by a team of institutions and industries and demonstrated at commercial scale in a one-of-a-kind prototype. The impact on processed commercial components will be discussed in terms of microstructural changes, mechanical properties and process efficiency. |
