Abstract Scope |
This study introduces a novel experimental setup for laser additive manufacturing using simultaneous Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) measurements at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray Free Electron Laser facility. The procedure employs an X-ray pump-probe technique to capture rapid structural changes during material processing. The experiment utilizes a simplified setup of a pulsed Ti:sapphire
laser (150 ps, 800 nm, 16 mJ) melting on Al and Cu foils (50-200 µm) at ps and ns time delays. The configuration allows concurrent SAXS and WAXS data collection, enabling comprehensive characterization across multiple length scales with ps-ns temporal resolution. We detail our data acquisition framework, which addresses challenges of handling high-volume, high-repetition-rate data streams. While preliminary experiments have validated the setup's functionality, comprehensive analysis of observed phenomena continues. This methodology promises to elucidate fundamental nucleation kinetics and phase transitions in laser additive manufacturing processes. |
