Transmutation-induced products due to neutron irradiation in structural materials for fusion and fission reactors are not well known. We present study cases of several irradiated structural materials including tungsten as a plasma facing material, stainless steel as baffle former bolts, and cladding in light water reactor. Although electron microscopy offers deep insights on materials structural changes, light elements such as hydrogen isotopes are not easy to detect. Transmutation products with close mass are not easy to resolve using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is shown to be a suitable choice for detecting transmutation products including light and heavy elements, their oxides, and ion clusters in our recent efforts, indicative of the irradiation process. Irradiated materials are reduced to small sizes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) – focused ion beam (FIB) prior to multimodal analysis and imaging. |
