| Abstract Scope |
Confocal microscopic observations of the populations of crystals formed in a dense liquid of colloidal particles with depletion attraction reveal coarsening: smaller crystals disappear, and larger ones grow. The time-dependent size distribution of the crystals is consistent with interface-controlled Ostwald ripening. Since this process is driven by the interfacial energy between the crystals and the surrounding liquid, an attempt is made to measure this quantity directly from interfacial fluctuations on large crystal-liquid interfaces. |
