| Abstract Scope |
The primary goal of this research has been to establish a systematic approach for identifying solute atoms that can be employed to promote radiation resistance by trapping point defects. Previous computational screening using density functional theory (DFT) showed that dilute Cu-Zr-Fe and Cu-Ge-Ni are promising ternary alloy systems due to their high 'B'-'C' solute-solute binding energy as well as 'B'-vacancy binding energy. Binary and ternary alloy thin films are deposited on thermally oxidized silicon wafers using DC magnetron sputtering and irradiated using 2 MeV Ti+ ions up to 30dpa at 300C. Subsequent microstructural analysis was completed using high resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Enrichment of solute was measured using STEM-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Atomic probe tomography was utilized to accurately measure solute concentrations at grain boundaries and interfaces. |
