| Abstract Scope |
The objective of this study is to quantify the influence of exposure time, temperature, and applied stress intensity factor (K) on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of Hastelloy-N in molten FLiNaK. Fatigue pre-cracked compact tension (C(T)) specimens were wedge-loaded in laboratory air at ambient temperature to target K levels between 30 and 45 MPa√m, followed by exposure to either an inert argon gas environment or molten FLiNaK at temperatures between 550℃ and 700℃ for times up to 500 hrs. Post-exposure, each specimen was removed and cleaned, then bisected via electric discharge machining with one half mounted for cross-sectional characterization of the near-crack region and the other half fast fractured for characterization of the fracture surface. Results reveal distinct differences between the argon and molten FLiNaK-exposed specimens, with clear intergranular fracture noted in the latter. These results are interpreted based on observed differences in near-crack deformation and elemental composition. |
