Abstract Scope |
Li-ion technologies have several disadvantages including higher cost, safety concerns, lack of recyclability. Lead acid batteries (LABs) are a very promising to fulfill the energy storage needs. While LABs have been utilized for a long time, the pre-mature failure and relatively short service life are still key barriers. However, to date, there is still little data on how the structural properties of LAB electrodes as they are cycled.
This study is the first-ever operendo confocal Raman microscopy analysis of the changes and relationships in the material, chemical and structural properties of lead batteries. A WiTec Confocal Raman microscope is used to analyze LAB electrodes at the microscale during battery operation. The in-situ micro-analysis can provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolution in LAB-related materials during the operating life. The deeper understanding can help to identify failure mechanisms and provide insight for new optimum design with better performance and reliability. |
