| Abstract Scope |
Designing new materials with well-defined structures and desirable functions at the nanoscale remains a central challenge in materials science. Nature, by contrast, achieves highly complex, functional nanostructures through the self-assembly of simple building blocks—nanofibers that pass through transient non-equilibrium states to form stable nano- and microscale architectures, which further organize into macroscopic hierarchical structures. Inspired by these strategies, this talk presents our work on functional nanomaterials built through biomimetic self-assembly, including systems based on genetically and chemically engineered viral particles. We further extend biomimicry to biologically derived components—including materials sourced from the human body and other living organisms—as a broader design framework for advanced bio-applications. Within this framework, we highlight careful interface design as key to integrating these nanomaterials into bio-inspired sensing and energy-harvesting platforms. |
