| Abstract Scope |
To better understand the reactivity of biochars in alkaline media, which remains insufficiently explored, this study investigated the potential of six different biomasses for the production of sustainable binders. Initially, the materials were characterized in terms of their composition and pozzolanic activity. Additionally, SEM, FTIR, and XRD analyses were performed. Subsequently, specimens were molded using biochars activated with sodium hydroxide, with water used as the control condition, and subjected to compressive strength tests. Overall, the results indicated low pozzolanic activity and limited mechanical strength; however, two biochars exhibited superior performance, particularly the sugarcane-derived biochar. Taken together, the mechanical and microstructural results contribute to a better understanding of the influence of biomass origin on the reactivity and performance of biochars in alkaline media, providing insights for the development of alternative binders and more sustainable construction materials. |
