| Abstract Scope |
The degradation of 70/30 brass in ammoniacal media induces selective dezincification, compromising its mechanical integrity in industrial components such as capacitors. The objective was to evaluate the corrosion susceptibility of 70/30 brass exposed to a 3% by volume NH₄OH solution, considering the effect of electrolyte degradation over time on its electrochemical behavior.
Open circuit potential (OCP), polarization resistance (Rp), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (Tafel) tests were performed with fresh and degraded electrolytes. Nyquist and Bode plots indicated higher resistance and lower phase angles, while OCP curves showed primarily anodic behavior. In linear polarization, a lower corrosion rate and higher Rp were shown, accompanied by a decrease in pH, confirming the degradation of the electrolyte and its direct influence on the electrochemical response of the material. |
