| Abstract Scope |
This study evaluated the feasibility of mechanically recycling Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG) waste from 3D printing into new Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) filaments. Recycled flakes from failed prints and defective parts were extruded into 1.75 mm filaments. Specimens were then fabricated via FDM using both virgin and recycled PETG. Compression testing was performed according to ASTM to evaluate compressive strength and modulus. The results demonstrated that recycled PETG maintained satisfactory mechanical performance. Although minor reductions in compressive properties were observed compared to the virgin polymer, the recycled specimens exhibited stable behavior under compressive loads. In conclusion, converting PETG manufacturing waste into new FDM filaments is a highly viable approach. This mechanical recycling strategy successfully reintegrates waste into the production cycle, reducing material disposal and promoting sustainable, circular economy practices within the additive manufacturing industry. |
