High-burnup reactor operations demand innovative burnable absorber designs, prompting interest in advanced Gd2O3-ZrO2 ceramic composites. However, microstructural evolution and diffusion-induced grain boundary migration (DIGM) remain poorly understood, making simulation essential to accelerate and optimize high-performance designs. This study employed a Kim-Kim-Suzuki phase-field model implemented within the MOOSE simulation framework to investigate sintering behavior. Three cubic-based phases within the 1400–1600°C range were explicitly considered. The driving force for DIGM incorporated coherency strain energy by treating the elastic coefficient as an orientation-dependent variable using cubic symmetry. The simulations embedded a Gd2O3 particle within a pre-sintered, polycrystalline ZrO2 matrix. The 2D simulations replicated characteristic corrugated boundaries driven by DIGM, leading to highly irregular boundaries and abnormal grain growth around the central particle. Conversely, peripheral areas experienced minimal solute diffusion, exhibiting conventional grain growth. The resulting microstructure after sintering can be used to estimate mechanical properties such as fracture toughness and hardness. |
