| Abstract Scope |
The iron and steel manufacturing industry remains indispensable to modern society yet meeting surging global and domestic demand requires urgent innovation in production efficiency. Microwave hydrogen plasma technology offers a promising, fully electrified alternative to incumbent technology. As an electrodeless process, it directly couples electrical energy to gas heating while generating highly reactive hydrogen radicals that facilitate rapid iron ore reduction. To maximize the interaction with the short-lived hydrogen radicals and hot plasma zone, we developed an in-flight reduction process of iron ore fines. In this presentation, we report in situ measurements, process optimization results and product characteristics of in-flight iron ore reduction in a laboratory-scale microwave hydrogen plasma reactor. We will contrast these results with thermal in-flight reduction, provide a perspective on how this technology could scale to enable industrial adaption and identify the associated key metrics. |
