Abstract Scope Nano-bainitic steels with aluminum additions have recently demonstrated exceptional strength-ductility combinations. This study explores novel heat treatment pathways that enable the formation of microstructures containing retained austenite and nano-bainite in high-Al medium-Mn steels. A computer-aided alloy design framework is employed to tailor austenite stability while enabling the formation of nanoscale bainitic ferrite. Heat treatments will be applied using dilatometry to the investigated steels, facilitating the evaluation of bainite transformation kinetics and optimization of heat treatment parameters. Resulting phase fractions will be investigated using X-ray diffraction, while microstructural evolution will be characterized using Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). The results of this study are expected to be of interest to steel producers exploring next-generation steel alloy design and heat treatment concepts, as well as steel users who require grades with increased strength-ductility combinations.
