| Abstract Scope |
Alnico 8–9 alloys contain Ti as an important alloying element that can alter phase stability, elemental segregation, and magnetic microstructure development during heat treatment. In this study, a multicomponent phase-field framework is used to examine magnetic-field-assisted decomposition in Fe–Al–Ni–Co–Cu-Ti alloys as a model system for Ti-containing Alnico compositions. The model integrates CALPHAD-informed thermodynamics, coupled diffusion of multiple components, elastic coherency effects, and magnetic energy to describe the evolution of composition and morphology during spinodal decomposition. Unlike the base quaternary alloy, Ti addition introduces an additional pathway for chemical partitioning and can influence the balance between Fe–Co-rich magnetic regions and Ni–Al-rich nonmagnetic regions. Simulations are used to evaluate how Ti affects domain spacing, phase connectivity, compositional redistribution, and field-induced anisotropy. The results highlight the role of Ti in stabilizing Alnico 8–9 type microstructures and demonstrate the capability of coupled phase-field modeling for designing advanced permanent magnet alloys. |
