| Abstract Scope |
High chlorine content in conventional magnesium refining fluxes leads to equipment corrosion and environmental issues. This work presents a thermodynamic study of the MgCl2–KCl–CaF2 system using FactSage calculations and phase diagram analysis. Phase equilibria, liquidus projections, density and viscosity were computed. The precipitation behavior of K2MgCl4 compounds and its influence on the complete melting temperature were specifically examined. Results show that controlling the MgCl2 mole fraction within 31–35% enables a eutectic liquid region with a theoretical complete melting temperature below 700 °C. The addition of CaF2 further expands the liquid region and adjusts flux density. By optimizing the composition window, candidate flux systems with theoretically suitable properties for refining were identified, providing thermodynamic guidance for the design of low‑chlorine fluxes. |
