Abstract Scope |
Nickel demand has increased with the growth of lithium ion batteries industry. Nickel has mainly been produced from sulfide ore but its depletion needs alternatives for new nickel sources. One of them is Nickel Pig Iron (NPI), which commonly contains about 10 wt% Ni. Due to the high Fe content, acid leaching prefers for Ni extraction and pretreatment like thermal oxidation has to be considered for selective Ni leaching. High Fe content hinders Ni leaching and thermal oxidation, so powder form is used to enhance surface area and reaction rates. In this study, water atomization process was applied to make the powder form of NPI, where various atomization parameters such as water pressure and orifice diameter were used to control the powder size. And then, the NPI powder was thermally oxidized at different temperatures and times to investigate oxidation kinetics and microstructural evolutions depending on the powder size. |
