| Abstract Scope |
Understanding material microstructures is one of the most important challenges in material science but there is a limitation in electron microscopy; it images structures as a 2D projection. We can obtain valuable information on volume and orientation of materials by using tomography in an SEM to reconstruct a 3D dataset from multiple 2D images. In this work, this technique is used to analyze composition dependent shapes of primary reinforcement particles of novel aluminum alloys. Determining the nature and 3D orientation of the eutectic structures with respect to solidification gives us valuable insight into the preferred direction of formation and how those structures form based on composition. We can use this data to engineer materials with a microstructure that enhances desired properties such as creep resistance by testing the characterized alloys and modifying the composition to adjust the eutectic structure or applying techniques such as heat treatment to improve structural stability. |
