Abstract Scope |
Nanomechanical and microstructural assessment were conducted for plastically deformed Mg-Li based alloys. Significant grain refinement and crystallographic reorientation were observed mostly in alloys rich with alpha Mg phases. Diverse nanoindentation techniques revealed that hardness, strength, strain hardening and strain rate sensitivity varied with lithium concentration and microstructures phase transformation from hexagonal close pack (HCP) to body centered cubic (BCC) matrix. These structural shifts enhanced dislocation mobility and altered the deformation responses of the alloys. At lower lithium concentrations, plastic deformation was dominated by basal slip and twinning, whereas, increasing lithium content favored cross slip. |
