| Abstract Scope |
Under extreme conditions, polycrystalline materials have been shown to experience significant changes in grain morphology through a process of microstructure evolution known as recrystallization. To predict how recrystallization processes unfold and influence a material’s performance at the engineering scale, we introduce a computational framework that models both the microstructure evolution and the mechanical response of polycrystals through dislocation-accommodated plasticity. The framework captures several competing mechanisms governing microstructure evolution, including the effects of grain orientations, dislocation defects formed during plastic deformation, and grain boundary properties. Additionally, the framework represents important recrystallization phenomena, such as grain boundary migration, directly on the solution mesh via a front-tracking approach. To validate the model, we compare simulation results against experimental measurements of dynamic recrystallization, demonstrating the framework’s predictive capability across several loading conditions, including those relevant to manufacturing. |
