Abstract Scope |
Selective laser flash sintering (SLFS) is a direct additive manufacturing process for ceramics that does not use a polymer binder. The process relies on a dense powder bed which is scanned by a laser in the presence of an electric field to initiate flash sintering. Subsequent layers are built up to create a three-dimensional part. Consistent spreading and compaction from one layer to the next is key to obtaining parts with uniform densities and minimizing distortion during post-process sintering. New holder geometry allows for direct spreading of powder with a blade, improving consistency. It also eliminates required movements of the packed powder bed, limiting opportunities for damage.
Process capability was qualified with mechanical testing and compared to traditionally compacted and sintered ceramic specimens. Biaxial compression testing was performed to compare the flaws present in traditional samples and samples spread and compacted by the new SLFS method. |
