| Abstract Scope |
Transpiration cooling is being explored as a means of thermal protection in hypersonic applications. This approach requires a combination of controlled interconnected porosity with structural and thermal stability. Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs) fulfill this need because they are able to withstand extreme temperatures, yet achieving precise, tailored porosity and permeability remains a challenge. Conventional machining of porous UHTCs is difficult, motivating the use of near-net manufacturing methods, such as Direct Ink Writing (DIW) and slurry casting. ZrB2-SiC inks are developed and characterized rheologically. Green shapes are subsequently debound and sintered. Microstructural and phase characterization, including pore size analysis and permeability testing are reported, along with preliminary testing under transpiration conditions. |
