| Abstract Scope |
Controlling welding fume exposure is a growing priority as regulatory limits tighten and fabricators focus on protecting welder health without sacrificing productivity. This technical presentation reviews a practical, layered approach to fume mitigation, including local exhaust ventilation, fume extraction MIG guns, PAPRs and emphasizes the often-overlooked role of filler metal chemistry—specifically low-manganese consumables—as a highly effective, upstream control strategy.
Low-manganese filler metals are engineered to reduce manganese emissions at the source while maintaining required mechanical properties, arc stability, and weld appearance. Field and laboratory data show that these consumables can reduce manganese particulate emissions by roughly 50 percent with no changes to welding procedures, equipment, or welder technique. Attendees will gain actionable insight into how combining consumable selection with conventional controls delivers measurable reductions in fume exposure, simplifies compliance, and creates a healthier welding environment across high-volume fabrication applications. |
