| Abstract Scope |
The sustainability landscape of materials production is fundamentally connected to feedstock and processing chemistries. Recently, material separations utilizing selective sulfidation have been demonstrated to enable lower carbon manufacturing methods for a range of critical materials, including chromium and nickel. Herein, thermodynamic process levers to control oxide sulfidation are examined in the context of emerging industrial materials separation platforms. The roles of reducing atmospheres in modulating the selective sulfidation of oxide species in multicomponent systems are evaluated. Variations in endmember and solution mixing effects are characterized in the context of enthalpic, entropic, and bonding contributions to oxide sulfidation affinity. Together, these fundamental thermodynamic insights inform the development of novel ferroalloy production processes leveraging sulfidation chemistry for materials separation and upgrading. Thermodynamic trends in sulfidation selectivity are validated experimentally in the production of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum ferroalloy systems from primary and secondary feedstock sources. |
