| Abstract Scope |
The global steel industry is undergoing a transition toward scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking to meet demands for decarbonization and sustainable resource utilization. However, steel scrap contains tramp elements such as copper and tin, which cannot be removed by conventional refining processes and therefore accumulate during repeated recycling. During reheating and hot-rolling, Cu enriches at the steel/scale interface owing to its higher oxidation resistance than Fe, forming a Cu-enriched liquid phase that penetrates grain boundaries. This liquid-metal-assisted cracking phenomenon, known as Cu-induced surface hot shortness, is regarded as a form of liquid metal embrittlement (LME). In this study, in-situ observations of the deformation and fracture behavior of steels containing different levels of tramp elements were conducted using a high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM) tensile system under simulated hot-rolling conditions. The effects of tramp elements on surface hot shortness were investigated through high-temperature mechanical properties. |
