Nanobubbles (NBs) offer exceptional potential for a broad range of materials and energy applications involving multiphase fluid systems owing to their high surface-area-to-volume ratio, long-term colloidal stability, and pronounced interfacial activity. Using nanobubble-assisted enhanced oil recovery (EOR) as a representative example, this talk demonstrates how nano-resolved imaging can reveal the fundamental mechanisms underlying NB-mediated interfacial phenomena. We combine high-resolution laser-based imaging with a spatial resolution down to 40 nm and multiphysics modeling to uncover these mechanisms. The results reveal the dynamic transition of stable NBs into unstable microbubbles and further demonstrate that bulk NBs preferentially adsorb onto oil-wet surfaces, generating an effective slip length of 18 μm, approximately three times greater than that of NB-free surfaces. At oil–water interfaces, NBs adsorb on both sides to form a sandwich-like configuration, thereby facilitating interfacial tension reduction. These findings establish a mechanistic framework for understanding NB-mediated interfacial phenomena and provide new insights into the rational design of nanobubble-enabled materials and energy technologies for complex multiphase fluid systems. |
