Abstract Scope |
This talk discusses how characteristics unconventional feedstock influence melting and solidification in laser additive manufacturing (AM) in pursuit of a circular economy and industrial symbiosis that can minimize waste. Repurposing, reusing, and recycling feedstock in laser directed energy deposition process can help enable near-net shape component fabrication, re-manufacture, and repair while minimizing environmental impact and costs in metals production. However, variations and contamination in feedstock introduce another level of uncertainty in metal AM that may alter production and the final component. But what if additive manufacturing can take advantage of these uncertainties and unlock new ways to process metal waste? The aim of the research presented in this talk is a vision where metal additive manufacturing is a part of our collective goal for a more sustainable world. |
